Swedish Legation in Budapest

The Swedish Legation in Budapest was the official organization representing the Swedish government in Budapest during World War II. The organization was left untouched by Nazi forces in Budapest due to the neutrality of Sweden.

In the novel The Wallenberg Dossier the Swedish Legation is often recalled.

With authorization from the Swedish government, Wallenberg’s activity in Budapest was coordinated and authorised by the Swedish Legation. He began distributing certificates of protection issued by the Swedish legation to Jews in Budapest shortly after his arrival in the Hungarian capital. He used WRB and Swedish funds to establish hospitals, nurseries and a soup kitchen, and to designate more than 30 “safe” houses. The international ghetto was reserved for Jews and their families holding certificates of protection from a neutral country.
